B

  • Bandwidth - A measure of data transfer, this would include any text, images or other data. The more bandwidth you purchase the more people can visit your site. It is analogous to the water meter outside your house.

  • Bit (b) - Stores a value of either true or false, basic unit of data storage.

  • Byte (B) - 8 bits

    D

  • Domain Name - Your "address" on the internet. You purchase a domain name from a registrar, such as Network Solutions. Example: yahoo.com, boblindquist.com, yourcompany.com

    G

  • Gigabyte (GB) - 1073741824 bytes or 1024 megabytes.(2 to the 30th power bytes)

    H

  • HTML - hypertext markup language; a document format that all web pages must be presented in so they can be displayed appropriately by the browser

  • HTTP - hypertext transfer protocol; the way web sites are delivered to your browser

    I

  • ISP - Internet Service Provider. Who you buy your internet from.

    M

  • Megabyte (MB) - 1,048,576 bytes (2 to the 20th power bytes)

  • MySQL - MySQL is an open source database system, recently acquired by Sun Microsystems.

    P

  • PHP - An interpreted programming language very useful for producing web sites and other document formats.

  • Presence Site - a basic web site to give a business a presence on the Internet but one that usually does not have dynamic content or any user interaction

    R

  • Registrar - a company that sells domain names. An example of a registrar would be Network Solutions (www.netsol.com)

    S

  • Static - a page whose content does not change

    U

  • URL - uniform resource locator; the complete address of your web site such as http://boblindquist.com including the protocol (http,ftp)

    W

  • Web Browser - A program used to browse the world wide web. Examples include Internet Explorer, Safari and Mozilla. A web browser connects to a web server to retrieve and display web sites.

  • Web Hosting - A required service for people to be able to view your web site. The leasing of a computer or a portion of a computer to deliver your web site when someone attempts to visit it on the Internet. You could think of this as a telephone answering machine to play your "message" when someone "calls".
